Our youth are bombarded with all kinds of mixed messages. The are taught one thing at home and at church and they hear something else from the media – advertizers. As a result we have confused young generation. Therefore, as youth leaders we must help our students think critically. “The center for parent and youth understanding” is a ministry with great resources that can help us in this endeavor. (The Center for Parent/Youth Understanding is a nonprofit organization committed to building strong families by serving to bridge the cultural-generational gap between parents and teenagers.)
Here is an exampleof what CPYU offers:
This Speed Stick ad appeared in the July 2008 editions of Spin (p. 93), Vibe (p. 55) andBlender (p. 2). The ad shows a guy doing a back flip off a wall with a tag line that reads, “Put on. Take off.” In tiny print in the bottom left corner it reads, “Highly trained athletes. Do not attempt.” This ad could be used to discuss issues related to truth and responsibility in advertising.
