I cannot be thankful when I get sick. No one likes to be sick and unable to function normally. There is no was I could be thankful for my sickness.

I cannot be thankful when I hurt emotionally. I cannot be thankful when friends mistreat me and when people say mean things to me.

I always wanted a best friend just like everyone else, but it seems that no one wants to be best friends with me. Yeah, I cannot be thankful for not having a best friend.

I cannot be thankful when my family is falling apart. It is so hard to live with a mom and a dad that fight all the time.

My parents work all the time and they never seem to have time for me. I cannot be thankful for that.

I cannot be thankful for parents who never tell me they love me.

I cannot be thankful for not having a father. In fact, I am angry with him for leaving me.

Sometimes I compare myself to others and I feel like I always come short. I don’t have the good looks, the talent and the abilities others have. How can I be thankful for who am? Certainly, I could be thankful if I had the fame of Beyonce, the money of Bill Gates and the talent of Peyton Manning.

I don’t always feel accepted at school. Sometimes I don’t feel accepted at church or even in my own family. So tell me, how could I be thankful?

When I have problems, I sometimes pray… but only sometimes, because God never seems to care about my problems and me. I cannot thank God for not answering my prayers. In fact, most of the time feels like God forgets me. Again, I cannot thank God for forgetting me.

(Some of you would like to be in a relationship with a certain person, but for whatever reason it isn’t happening. There is no way you can be thankful for not being in that relationship. If anything, you are very discontent with the situation you are in.)

It’s Thanksgiving Day and I guess I should be thankful for something…

I guess I could be thankful for little things like water, food, sight, hearing, being able to walk and talk. However, these are ordinary things and they may not even count.

On the other hand, there are people who do not have these “little things”.

QUESTIONS:

Take freedom for example. When people take freedom for granted, they do not think much about it. They are used to it and it is not a big deal to them. However, those who have no freedom will tell you that freedom is priceless. Unfortunately, people do not know what they have until they lose it. The same goes with health.

Ingratitude is often the result of overabundance. Those who have nothing take nothing for granted. The pilgrims were looking for civil and religious liberty because they did not have them. As a result they were truly grateful when they found them. They were also thankful when they brought in a bountiful harvest, and grateful to the Indians who helped make it possible.

Let’s be thankful for the things we have and stop focusing on the things we don’t have. Every time we fixate on the things we want, on the things we don’t have, we forget the blessings God has given us and we turn into ungrateful people. Ungratefulness is one of the ugliest things a human being can bring forth from his or her heart.
Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NLT)
